The Youth Sports Association in Kigali
Our Mission Statement
Prevailing conditions in Rwanda contribute to the potential for an HIV & AIDS explosion. In particular, adolescents (10-14 years) and youths (15-19 years) are considered most vulnerable to HIV infection. The knowledge, attitudes & practices of Rwandese in relation to HIV & AIDS greatly contribute to the threat posed by the disease, which is further exacerbated by the loss of qualified teachers during the genocide.
Executive Summary
Increase individual & community capacity of children & youth through training. To encourage HIV/AIDS awareness & the adoption of healthy lifestyle behavior through regular & inclusive sport & play activities for children & youth aged 5-35. To collaborate with partners to encourage community-based initiatives in HIV/AIDS education & prevention using activities & games as the medium to communicate this. To support the national social mobilization strategy for HIV/AIDS prevention in Rwanda aimed at reducing the incidence of HIV infections through the use of Athlete Ambassadors, sport festivals & special play days.
Some of the sports used in the project include football & volleyball. The programs are crafted to uphold the values of development – equity, inclusion & sustainability. In addition to improving health & well being, the programs also serve as tools to teach important values & life skills & to spread messages of health & peace.
