Hoops 4 Hope is packing a bus full of sneakers destined for Africa

MAY, 2007 - Hoops 4 Hope has been collecting and donating used sports equipment to disadvantaged kids in Southern Africa for over 10 years. Recently though, they got a great idea to get that stuff from here - in the States where they collect it - to the other side of the Atlantic, where they deliver it.

One of the challenges for kids in Africa isn’t just getting their hands on stuff we take for granted like uniforms and shoes, but also how to get to their practices and games. Cars are even harder to come by than sneakers! So lots of kids often walk amazing distances just to practice or play.

So Hoops 4 Hope said, “Why not find a way to get a school bus, fill it with shoes, and ship it all over to Zimbabwe together? Then you have equipment and transport!” It seemed like a crazy idea at first, but now that is exactly what’s happening.

This month “Hoops” teamed up with Back 2 Basics Basketball and The New York Knicks to help fill the bus up with sneakers. The Knicks’ Kenny “Sky” Walker and The New York Liberty’s Kim Hampton were just a few of the all-star volunteers on hand in the Bronx to make it happen.
